2014 CAE Recipient Profile - ArcelorMittal Dofasco
ArcelorMittal Dofasco is Canada’s leading producer of steel and an integral part of the world’s largest steel and mining company. Headquartered in Hamilton, Ontario, our more than 5,000 employees are transforming tomorrow by making everyday products lighter, stronger and more sustainable. Through world-class research and development, we play a key role in North America’s advanced manufacturing supply chain, working alongside top automotive, energy, packaging and construction brands – making everything from cars to cans.
Foundational to the company’s strategy is a focus on people, a commitment that spans our more than 100 year history. Known across Canada through the iconic slogan Our Product is Steel. Our Strength is People, ArcelorMittal Dofasco strives to continuously improve a robust and comprehensive healthy workplace strategy, emphasizing wellness of mind and body, at home and work.
Our Healthy Workplace strategy is managed by an Integrated Health team, who target engagement at all levels of the organization with each individual encouraged to support and participate in a variety of wellness programs. This is especially true of the senior management team, who lead by example – running road races or participating in a variety of activities like weight loss challenges.
Informed by detailed monthly reports and annual Health Scorecards, ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s senior leadership group continue to make strategic health and wellness investments in everything from fitness equipment to smoking cessation programming and have since 2001 lived by the principle that “Nothing is more important than the health and safety of everyone working on our site”.
Through our Journey to Zero health and safety initiative, teams across the organization are encouraged to Stop, Challenge and Choose to be healthy, fit and able to do their job. Underpinning this is a wide body of work aimed at one outcome -- zero accidents and zero injuries, which is supported by an on-site Medical Facility and Circle of Care with services ranging from monitoring and managing occupational injuries/illness, to comprehensive prevention initiatives. Augmenting these resources further is a Lifestyle Resource Group, who deliver an array of services at four on-site fitness centres and a 1000-acre Recreation Centre.
Beyond the infrastructure required to stay fit and healthy are parallel programs like nutrition and weight management strategies, diabetes prevention programs, post cardiac rehabilitation and post physiotherapy programs along with employee and family counseling, all ensuring that wellness is deeply integrated into the ArcelorMittal Dofasco work experience.
At ArcelorMittal Dofasco, we have long known that when you invest in people, you are investing in the health of your business, increasing efficiency and productivity. Today, through our new operating model called World Class Manufacturing, individuals and teams are being empowered to optimize what they do in their daily work through a clear organizational focus on eliminating “losses” in every aspect of our business.
Since Dofasco was awarded the National Quality Institute’s Gold Level in 2002, much has changed in our industry, including the company’s acquisition by ArcelorMittal in 2006. When ArcelorMittal Dofasco applied for the Healthy Workplace Award again in 2014, we did so because our belief and commitment to integrated wellness remains unwavering. As one of our country’s most innovative advanced manufacturers, we are honoured to receive Canada’s Award for Excellence.
