Toronto East General Hospital (TEGH) is a full service community teaching hospital providing primary and secondary acute care services and select tertiary care services. With one of the busiest Emergency Departments in Toronto, our 2500 staff, 400 physicians and 500 volunteers have provided care to the diverse, multi-cultural community of east Toronto since 1929.
A respected teaching and research partner of the University of Toronto and many other educational institutions, TEGH has committed to role-modeling excellence and leadership in workplace mental health. Our journey to achieve excellence and develop and sustain a culture focusing on quality, wellness and continuous improvement has been a strategic priority for many years.
Since becoming the first hospital in Canada to receive the Order of Excellence in 2010, TEGH has been awarded 13 Accreditation Canada national leading practices, including one for Mental Wellness in the Workplace and one for improving employee engagement through quarterly staff engagement surveys. This focus on workplace mental wellness resulted in:
- Highest staff engagement results (2014), positioning TEGH as Ontario’s community-hospital leader in nine of eleven engagement categories measured.
- Only hospital in Canada to be awarded a second Order of Excellence for Quality and Healthy Workplace. (2014)
- Second consecutive Platinum Quality Healthy Workplace Award from the Ontario Hospital Association and the Ministry of Long Term Care.
- Designated a leader in building a Mentally Healthy Workplace by the Mental Health Commission of Canada.
Our partnerships with Excellence Canada and the Mental Health Commission of Canada have helped guide TEGH and ensure we achieve our goals and priorities. Our dedication to building a healthy work environment and a recognition that healthy staff provide better patient-centered care is engrained in everything we do.
