Canada Awards for Excellence

Recipient Profile

Carleton University

2017 Silver Recipient
Mental Health at Work

Carleton University began its healthy workplace journey in 2007 with a benchmarking project that examined best practices at post-secondary and public institutions. After conducting a needs assessment, Carleton identified workplace mental health as integral to its Healthy Workplace initiative and adopted Excellence Canada’s Mental Health at Work® framework in 2013. It then implemented the National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace and joined the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s Case Study Research Project as the only post-secondary institution.

Over the years, Carleton has invested in policies and initiatives that support workplace health and safety and launched targeted initiatives nurturing healthy living and positive mental health. The Healthy Workplace Committee and Champions, enthusiastic ambassadors of the Healthy Workplace initiative, have brought workplace wellness to the forefront of daily life and embedded it into the culture at Carleton University.

“In 2009, Carleton University adopted Excellence Canada’s Healthy Workplace criteria as a beacon to guide it through its Healthy Workplace journey. This university-wide initiative promotes an ongoing culture of health and wellness – physical and mental – to all faculty and staff across campus. The Healthy Workplace initiative has celebrated many successes since its inception and achieving Platinum is one indication that employee health and wellness have become part of the culture at Carleton. “
